Yes, at the very start of the game it will be impossible for you to: a) Build a row boat. b)Build an... Avil. c)Kill a troll. d)Hold some charcoal. But just because you can't do everything instantly doesn't mean you won't be able to eventually. A row boat just needs blocks and boards, that means once you've killed a chicken and got the lp for the skill you can build a boat (and probably get to another continent if you are determined enough). Not to mention whirlpools will be much more useful now (if they exist).

Re-read what he said :) They don't want to wait until some of them can choose a place and build all the beacons.

Build the beacons straight away, then all spread out looking for a place (you'll all be on the same continent) and the meet there.
Cost of building a wilderness beacon:
375lp (picking seeds from trees can give you this in moments)
10 clay (shallow water or mud flats will give you plenty)
20 blocks of wood (there are literally dead trees EVERYWHERE)
10 boards (the hardest part, you've got to find a chicken!!! or a rabbit, quail, crab, magpie... some other new bird)

Again: all that speculation about "what if islands will be isolated by uncrossable on rowboats deep water" is exactly that. No barriers - no problem. I'll find my way to overcome the challenge. :P

And here I should apologize for my spelling... But I won't! Deal with it :P

true, every new guy you summon can gatter materials for summoning the ones that come after, so you can have 50 people in any place in the first 45 minutes of the game or less if you get lucky with 1 or more chickens.

Also - there is no confirmed info (correct me if I am wrong) that it's impossible to cross the ocean by boat...

They said on stream that players should not be able to cross OCEAN water on a rowboat.
So question stands - how limited small islands will be and if new players will indeed spawn on them.

I don't remember that, only that they want to make ocean travel dangerous. Of course, I might have missed it. I'll try to view the whole stream again later this evening, but if you remember when it was and can find exact point in time I would be grateful. ;)

Two things: It's likely that row boats will need additional materials (like tar) in the future, also they definitively will not be fit to reach other continents.

Was mentioned somewhere in the stream.

maybe ocean currents could be a thing? making travel faster across the water if you follow it, and making a priority to build trading hubs or outpost where these currents touchs the continents.

oh shit i just figured it, they want ocean travel so they can give us scurvy. fuck.

Who knows, currents might be the thing that keeps smaller boats from entering the oceans. Or you can try but it will be hard as it pushes you back.

Have they addressed how the gargantuan world size in world 8 was a problem because there was little friction, and how they're going to stop that from happening in a world that's large enough to support oceans and continents?
