This is another spot that needs fixed on the map gen. Ore boulders either need to be more evenly distributed (ie purely random) or gotten rid of. Maybe there's a mechanic there I'm not aware of and some people have figured it out, but it seems when I've found them, there's clusters of a few different types, and that's it.

edit: to clarify my last sentence--some areas have lots of ore on the surface, other areas have none. If this were a more realistic map generator, then this is probably as it should be, but it doesn't feel that way.

I agree that surface boulders were just dumb.
Surface stone is okay, ore is not.

Ever thought about adding in a common enemy for the players to fight? Like an ever expanding goblin army or something like that. They can cut trees and mine and they expand constantly. Wiping out villages causing us to band together to fight off this threat.
We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like.
