I never found one either, so you are not alone ... but I did receive some lovely gift boxes from players, so that more than made up for it. 
I'm curious about this though;
Did anyone find gifts with birds? And how was it done? I killed a lot of birds over Christmas, lol.

Magpies can "carry" items, if you catch a magpie that has one and right click it, you'll have an option called "Retrieve swag".
They will also pick up items dropped on the ground.
