sure, you can do that, but it's still kind of a shame to have such crappy choice of colours

this is the color palette you can work with. there is no gray, so it will render as either magenta or cyan depending on the lightness.

this was a black to white gradient:

That's 2 colors more than in actual European heraldry, so nothing to complain about :)

You get the option to make the new objects/items when you craft a coloured sketch
I couldn't make the banners. Probably missing a discovery on those.

Do you need a brand new colored sketch for each item you craft with it?
What slot does the tabard go into?

From the pic above, it would appear robe slot. (hes wearing a hat, shirt, and leather armour)

The image analyzer could perhaps do a better job at mapping the colors, but I reckon you'll want to fix up the palette manually anyway. If you just try to put any random JPEG or something in there you'll get a ton of noise fields and even the best intentions from the analyzer couldn't do a good job at it.
