No idea how they're force resetting large areas or scouting them, but in a 6 hour exploratory trip last night and all foraging trips since the patch I have yet to see one. So perhaps just make spawning less exploitable rather than making them unfeasible to hunt or find for the less than hardcore crowd.

agreed, just make them harder to hunt not nerf the spawn rate which is quite low anyway

I found for 2-3 hours. and some respawn was have 2 mammoth in one place.

i have seen 3 in the course of 2 days, so claiming that because someone found a few more and was lucky is no reason to nerf just yet, just wait to see if the spawn is truly too much over the course of a week or 2.

we just foraging. it 20 min. and 1 more in a base! so it's to much.

Almost certainly some kind of mix of woods
Possibly cypress blocks, planewood boards? It's impossible to tell without just trying a bunch
