I don't about rabbits, Maze put out some pics with killer rabbits and big front teeth.

Yeah, my two cents say walrii (and maybe other creatures, such as wolves) should be territorial and leave you the hell alone once you leave their bubble.

for that matter - hearthlings engaged by animals should start on peaceful mode until they strike back.

This. Combined with territorial animals should give a chance to be 'chased away' by it, voided when going aggressive.
