Pyrite isn't itself explosive, or will even burn. It got its name because it sparks against steel just like flint. (Wikipedia FTW!) It is a good source of sulfur, but we already have that with brimstone.

but pyrite was one of the earliest way to make a primer for guns

Pyrite was used in place of flint as it is easier to get sparks off of. Downside is that it isn't as durable and isn't as hot. Gunpowerder is just easy to set off vs trying to ignite tinder for a fire.
