This is how my New Years Eve went:

PC: "Boot sector not found. Press F8 for more options."

Damn hard drive decided to crap out on me.

I'm using Crucial SSDs for systems even in old toasters (also one 1GB one for Steam and actual played games) and some 1GB - 4GB HDDs as "datagraves"

I'd recommend to get an SSD when your old ones boot record is fixed, clone the system and use the HDD as storage

(Crucial btw. because even if they decide to "crap out" it's still possible to read them and copy which isn't the case with most other brands)

This. And have a copy of the SSD on the HDD, in case the former decides to die on a whim.

Let me just say the total cost of this upgrade was less than $100, and while I may not need a 1TB drive, I can't get by with smaller.* Believe me when I say I can't afford such things in my life at the present time, not if I want to eat or feed children, anyway. Replacing the drive is an unexpected expense that, thankfully, I can delay a few weeks, maybe couple months.

*Smaller isn't any cheaper, anyway. a 1 TB drive is still $50-60, a 2 is $70, and you can get 4 for under $120. I found a 500 and 700 GB desktop drives, both were $40-50. It's just the old hardware that nobody wants to liquidate because it will eventually sell off at regular prices. The last time I recall drive prices dropping fast was the transition from FAT32 to NTFS as the majority file system. I'm glad to see one of the "OS sized" drives (120 GB) was listed for $30 this last week.

Complete change of tact... we all know resolutions don't really work, but sometimes it's enough to push the ship in the right direction, so, here's mine:

Get something published on one of my games I've had "laying about" for years. They say all it takes is making that first step, and the next are easier. (Unless it's a diet... then the cravings hit and you're done for.) I'm not sure what, exactly, but even just posting the start of something is a good first step. If people come along and start liking it and wanting to watch development, even better.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

some cheap 128 gb ssd costs like 20€ which is plenty of space for OS and some programs that you often use (of course, not all files need to be on SSD)
eat some porridge a few days straight and you have saved that sum
