Planned downtime: Server move (2019-02-27 13:00 UTC)

Postby loftar » Wed Feb 27, 2019 1:35 am

As mentioned previously, it's time to migrate the server to new hardware, in an attempt to remedy the current lag situation. Since all data has to be transferred over the network, the server move is going to take some time, and the game will be down for several hours.

I can't predict exactly how long it will take, but based on previous experience, I would expect the data transfer itself to take roughly five hours. During this time, most functions will be down, including not only the game itself, but also such things as account creation and logins. I'll keep the forums up during the transfer so that you can post about all your very important frustrations, but only if you were logged in prior to the start of the transfer.

After the transfer itself is complete, I'm sure I'll have some debugging to do as to why the new server will predictably fail to boot or whatever, but after that I'll take the forums down to transfer everything posted in the meantime, and then I'll repoint the DNS entries to the new server, and we should be ready to go. Note that DNS entries are cached over the Internet, and so updates will reach everyone at slightly different times (though I've prepared by setting the TTL fairly low). I'll start the game server only once I'm fairly confident that most people will have had the updates propagated to them (that is, after at least one TTL period).

I'll take the game off-line at the time indicated in the subject, at which point the data transfer will commence.

NVMe and hard drives in bcache. Though I'd expect pretty much everything to fit on the SSDs, so it should be just as good performance-wise as having only them. I'm somewhat looking forward to seeing how that works in practice.

Looking forward to a totally lag free and high performance game.

Not sure if ironic or not, but let's try and keep those expectations in check. :)

A little ironic, a little optimistic. How's that? :)
