Feedback please: Do you require support for OpenGL 2?

Postby loftar » Sat Feb 15, 2020 1:50 am

For details, see this post in the client-rewrite thread. This announcement is just to try to get some wider reach for the following question:

Do you require support for OpenGL 2.0 in order to play this game at all?

For the reasons detailed in the linked post (mostly in order to properly support MacOS), I'm strongly considering dropping support for it, so if you are relying on it, you might lose all access to the game. Again, see the linked post for any and all details. Also, please forward this post to anyone you know who could conceivably be affected, since not everyone is reading the forums.

I realize not everyone reading this may be aware of whether they need said support, but if you're using older or odd hardware, or mildly unusual software configurations, you may at least want to try to check. If anyone knows of a good program to help checking, please post all about it.

I guess one can simply try to create opengl context with all different versions to see which ones work?

This program claims to do that, I don't know much about it, but I installed and ran it and got this as a result:

Mac computers that use OpenCL and OpenGL graphics

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202823

The oldest in listing is a mid 2007 MacBook Pro with Nvidia Geforce 8600 - capable of 3.3 (2010) ... also it takes 10.3 at least for JOGL anyways AFAIK ( while i'm not a Mac / MacOS user )

RealtechVR OpenGL Extensions Viewer for MacOS
https://apps.apple.com/app/id444052073?mt=12

I'd wonder if anyone would run hafen on something older than Nvidia 8xxx or AMD HD 2xxx/3xxx anyways ...

so i think it's ok to get rid of 2.0 (2004) ...

Personally the boxes i connect to the Internet are 4.4+ capable at least

oh wait then i can't run hafen on my supermodded 999silver heatspreaded ATI 800XT PE AGP ... ... ;)

OpenGL2 is 16 years old. It's been upgraded to OpenGL3 12 years ago !
Why would you bother maintaining this, just drop it.

I'd also drop OpenGL3, which has been replaced by OpenGL4 10 years ago.
I mean 10 years support is already nice. Don't waste your time on old relics.

Man, I wish I was so careful when I work on a website and just think "Fuck IE 6" .. I'm clearly not :')

I think that wasting precious development time on iteration of technology wich is over 15 years old is a waste of work hours. Someday you need to drop support for "win 95" life is hard.

come on ... there are some ppl playing HnH for long years too that don't see the need to play the "steady upgrade hw" game ... (or won't afford) so OGL 3 is a fair compromise for the time being ... one huge plus of HnH always has been that it runs on a lot of toasters :)

and btw. if you'd ask to switch to vulkan i personally wouldn't be against - honestly i wouldn't mind if it be Linux only :-P

Thought I was limited to OpenGL 2.
...
Seems I'm not ... Techpowerup: geforce-8400-gs-rev-2
("OpenGL 3.3.0 NVIDIA 340.107" according to Nvidia x-server settings tool)
