Planned downtime: Server transfer (2023-11-07 18:00 UTC)

Postby loftar » Sun Nov 05, 2023 11:11 pm

It has become time to upgrade the server hardware that Haven runs on. I've already rented a new server at Hetzner, transferred the operating system itself and upgraded it to the latest version, and (I hope) solved the problems that were associated therewith.

As such, I will shut the current server down at 18:00 UTC this upcoming 7th of November, transfer the actual game data, and hope to bring it back up at 20:00 UTC. The idea is that two hours should be plenty of time to transfer the data, let DNS caches expire and take care of other such ordinary business. Hopefully it will be enough to do that and also take care of any remaining unforeseen events.

Not much more to say, I guess. TL;DR: The server will be down on 2023-11-07 18:00-20:00 UTC, and unless you've done something weird like hardcode the server IP addresses into your custom client or something, you shouldn't have to do anything.

For anyone interested, the new server is running an R7 7700 and has two Samsung PM9A1 SSDs, which I believe should improve the current main causes of lag, being partly that CPU time is sometimes insufficient, and partly that the SSDs in the current server have always displayed a bit of flaky behavior. The current system, for comparison, uses a Xeon E3-1275v5 and Toshiba XG3 SSDs. It also has an uptime of 1,383 days.

I've been lightly eyeing one for myself, but AM5 motherboard pricing is utterly ridiculous, at least in my neck of the woods.
