Most probable answer. Sometimes I've interacted with something as I typed, and inadvertently turned on criminal acts. Luckily, I was a million miles from a hostile claim whenever I did this, so never a scent I left.

However, the greatest bug here is why anyone would ever buy swimming at all... Swimming is great for suicide, and... well, suicide.

I have walked/swam across supergrids, and have never drowned.

Myself and a village mate spend around 4 hours walking and swimming across a good portion of the map while tracking a scent

Sorry, I'm a W3 vet, and just have nightmares of people screaming, "OMGWTFBBQ, I HAVE 9000 CON, BUT SWAM 2 TILES AND DROWNED!!!1!!1!11!!1!!" Longtime associate REWB even advises folks regularly that swimming is the quickest way to die in H&H, even faster than finding a RUA vault or petting a bear. I concur. Even if J & L have changed it, I don't think I'll trust it just yet...

You must have 9001 con then.

I have actually gotten a flotsam this way. I don't recommend it, though.

Use a boat! Duh! Winning!

This^ is how I have found the easiest way to get them. Though without a boat..well, that's their problem. I prefer the safety(some-what of safety)of my boat over swimming.
