Axe mutation?

I've had mutant Fishing Poles... they completely glitch out and cease to function, at all... depicted by the default fishing rod (totally unequipped) picture. This seems to happen only when using a lure for an extended amount of time, or randomly after using 1-shot baits...

My axe dissapeared not mutated, and the character is still using the animation if it was wearing the axe. And seeing a little bit of the axe while walking.

Fishing poles can break, this is supposed to happen, especially if you use a lure.
