Ideally I'd like a rotatable view and a proper stealth system based on line of sight, light conditions, clothing colours and movement noise, but loftar's plan sounds good enough to me and is far easier to code and draw.
Plus, the circle-of-transparency effect in ye olde 2D (as opposed to 3D) version of Ultima Online made the graphics draw a LOT slower - I'm betting the same would probably happen here if Haven isn't using a 3d engine.
