A very good question.

W3 = ~450 ppl.
W4 = ~1000 ppl.

I'm not sure about W3 start, but this much higher pop. makes it rather unstable. I've been playing for an hour now, and it's not once dc'd with 750 ppl online.

Same, 2 mins after

it might all be linked, i have someone on a different isp, and he gets booted at the same time i do. It can't be the isp Loftar, it's most definitely the host, and this just proves it further.

On the other hand, if the fault is with init7, it is not clear why they should be affected by that. I cannot imagine that Haven accounts for a large amount of their traffic.

How large is this company exactly, and where are their main server locations? The ping time may have something to do with it, but like you said, Haven can't be that much strain, considering the amount of data needed to be transferred.

Ping timeouts might be a problem, resting just outside the heartbeat max range.

Also, is there a bandwith limit to your share on init7?

I have two friends that play with me, and every 30 seconds - 5 minutes I am disconnected, and yet they have nothing at all. No lag or anything that happens to them.

I don't know how you coded the timeout for the clients, but in case there are to many packets lost it could well trigger the client to think that the server is dead (or the other way around).

One option would be to relax the timeout check (so the toon would only freeze on packetloss storm since no commands reach the server), so that you don't have to relog constantly but only suffer from 'lag'.

Downside would be that a client who really crashed to desktop would hang out longer on the server before a relog is possible ('already logged in').

Cure for this then could be delivered by tweaking the login procedure so that a client can reconnect to a dangling exsiting session on the server.

Downside for this would be that a user (or someone else who has the credentials) could login with another client and 'steal' the current session through this... but in case someone gains the login of another user there is a problem anyway, so it shouldn't do any harm. So only real downside would be that it would enable shared key alt accounts.

Just thought I'd throw this out here, for the last hour or so before the server ate it this morning I wasn't having any issues with DCing. Just thought to check init7.com and found they'd updated their service report this morning:
"Due to a large amount of flaps, we took down our port towards New York. Our supplier is investigating. No ETR so far."

Tracert shows me (Northern Canada, on Bell) being routed through Telia instead, and while overall pings are a hair higher, being able to play was easily a worthwhile tradeoff. Perhaps a ray of hope :p

I never gave them my name, but I gave Shaw my name. So it appears that Shaw actually contacted them for me :D
Hopefully the server will come up so I can get some decent playing in.
