The worst monsters in the Hearthlands warp the fabric of space and time..

Death By Log. Not fricking happy. =|

Postby Senretsu » Thu Mar 10, 2011 10:13 am

So I noticed some logs floating in the middle of the river
I tried to pick up the log. It told me to turn on swimming.
Curious, I turned on swimming, and attempted to pick up the log...

I instantly drowned and lost all my equipment, stats and skills.

Leather Cloak, gloves, pants, bunny slippers, straw hat, scythe, backpack, 25 archery, Seedbag and two flasks somewhat literally down the drain.

Is this a bug or something?
'Cause I think it's pretty screwed up if you're allowing people to do that to themselves. An error message would be more logical (and fair!) than having your character irreversibly try to stand up on the bottom of the ocean and instantly die.

I'm seriously disappointed by this. Third time I've died now. Once by Ant (which in somebody's brilliant guide I was told could not murder me) then again by a Boar (my fault, I'll accept that) then third by floating log. BAH!

So close to ragequit but I'd let down my whole village....
I thought in the least I'd log on and voice my complaint.
Fuck you HnH.

I think in the least it is my duty to tell you that nobody cares. Plenty of warnings in the guides about swimming if you had chosen to read them. Good luck anyways though.

I'm guessing you where on foot and tried to pick up a log near the water where it told you to turn on swimming if you wanted to go into deeper water. If so it's no bug and quite simply the log was in deeper water where you can pick it up using a boat.

Wait till you lose plate armor, 60MM, 40 Expl, 60 survival and 50 carpentry because you misjudged the distance from one side of the river bank to the other.

In general I'd say never press the swim button ever as too many things can go wrong for which I don't know the answer of what would happen. Like what happens if I log out while swimming or if some jack ass decides it might be funny to block me with a boat.

You can pick up river logs while in a boat.

Hope this helps!

I disagree. Swimming should be perilous but I think there should be a bit more interaction to it before death than "stamina falls everybody dies".

I don't think this counts as a bug, but it's one thing that could use more development :P

If I understood the OP correctly, he still had stamina left, but when he reached the log he drowned anyway.

if they were in the middle of the river and he had 10 con he would have drown from lack of stamina right about the time he reached the log.

1) Whenever you're in a boat in the deep part of the water (darker blue compared to the light blue on riverbank), and you press ctrl+click, you get a message tell you that you need swimming on to do that. Why? because you're trying to ctrl+click like you would to get out of your boat; in the middle of the river.

So what you did was: See the log, try to pick it up using ctrl+click ( no idea why... ), then assume you need swimming for some reason, turn it on and get out of your boat to drown yourself. If instead you had simply used your hotkey for lifting objects, you could have lifted it over your head without ever stepping out of your boat.

In other words: you didn't know what you were doing, and you paid for it. Trust me when I say, early on this will happen a lot in both large and small ways. By the sound of things, you weren't terribly far along. You'll be way more frustrated when you've spent 5+ weeks alive, slowly grinded out some millions of LP, and die to something silly.

2) Ants can't kill you if you fight them 1v1, if you try to raid their ant hill however, they will gang up on you and continue to attack you after you're down. In 1v1, the ant will immediately desist after you've been knocked down; I've tried it a ton of times. Again, you misunderstood something, and you paid for it. Again, get used to it or you're going to have a horrible existence for a long time.

3) TL;DR: Always be cautious, exploring new things is always more dangerous than it seems. If you can't handle minor setbacks (yes, they were, in relation to the entirety of the game and how much worse it could have been), consider trying something else.

PS: Not trying to crap on your thread, but this is how I see it. Better luck next time.

At least you didnt die because a lag spike hit. Was at just over 1,000,000 LP earned and had full steel stuff on, QQ. But yah, death is a part of this game, you learn to get over it (I have 7 deaths so far). Just never ever ever ever go swimming.

Sorry I haven't responded, I didn't come here just to complain. (Though really I started this thread just to vent)
I haven't ragequit yet, though a few clansmen of mine have. Which sucks.
As for what's been said...
I DID use my hotkey to try to pick up the log. In fact I never knew about the ctrl+click shortcut til you pointed it out. So far I've been figuring out shift-clicks and ctrl+r's by accident. That's what bothered me about it. I was in the boat, drove towards the log, hit my 1 key, (for lift) clicked the log and my character started standing in the water and poofed into a pile of nothing. At first, I was just frankly shocked, not even mad, just shocked that one wrong click insta-killed me. Didn't even give me a chance to turn on swimming, I just died like that.

And I now know I can pick up logs in a boat, thanks to our mod.
The ant thing... well I shoulda known better, frankly. But I was curious to see how combat worked and I didn't know frogs would be an easier option for that.

In more positive news my clan has an off-base outpost that's badly taken care of and I've found myself working the fields and regaining my skills and such. It's quite a big field. I just wish I still had my scythe. All my clan leaders are offline until monday though due to travel and such, so it's gonna be awhile before I can re-equip myself properly in our village as I'm now locked out of the claim. Even though technically I founded that village as the mayor..

Never let your second in command take care of Yeomanry duty's. O_o

Well, mods can lock this topic or leave it up to discussion at their discretion. As for me, I'm gonna keep trying. I found alot of roadkill to replace my leather with, I just hope nobody steals it off my drying racks until it's done until later today since my drying racks are in unclaimed territory...

Maybe this time I'll put belief's into "Tradition"
