The Mystery of the Vanishing Ore

Postby Curudan » Fri Sep 11, 2009 4:03 pm

I've been mining for a few months now, and I prefer to mine in bulk. I take seven or ten tea cups into the mine with me, and mine without picking up any of the ore. Then, I take a couple dozen trips in and out of the mine, carrying ore to the smelters.

Just a few minutes ago, I finished off the last of my tea cups, grabbed all the ore I could carry with me, and dumped ore and tea cups outside.

And, to my great astonishment, when I returned to the mine, I discovered that all of the ore had vanished!

I had only left the mine for a few seconds. So I know it wasn't thieves.

Help?

This is why you build smelters in the mine.

Except you can't do that anymore.

I can see that you have had no access to a mine in this world. You can't build smelters in mines anymore.

Edit: Which is what KOE just said.

Server crashes wipe out all dropped items on the floor.

Try experimenting: drop a stick in the mine, go out, and see what happens when you go back in.

Already done. I wasn't able to reproduce it.

Yeah, I think I'd know that, at least, after all this time, and no server crash happened at that time, anyway.

I have a vague theory that this had something to do with the hourly map save. The ore vanished around the turn of the hour.

You know..
I did the exact same thing, and saw it happen.

I dropped a branch because it was taking up space, I go off for a couple minutes, about 1-2, and I come back, thanks to my keen eye, I actually SAW the branch disappear, AKA, de-spawn.

Don't know what to tell you man.
The new world may have a despawning effect to make it less laggy?

P.S. I love your picture.

I used to do that too, mining 8 plots of 4x6, just enough to fill 2 smelters and 4 chests. Maybe you should keep some containers down there to store the batch you just mined until you're satisfied with how many ores you have?

It was like this in the old world too. After a certain amount of time, items on the ground plain old disappear.

Yeah, as I mentioned in the first post, this is definitely not my first time mining, and some of the ore had only been sitting for less than a minute.

Regardless, I've mined 10+ batches since this happened, and the problem has yet to recur. I suppose this mystery will never be solved.
