Cannot obtain clay?

I've been trying at many locations to get clay, but every time I dig for it the progress bar goes through and gives me nothing.

It's not an issue of stamina, as it's roughly full at the times I've been doing it.

Clay nodes can be hard to find. Just keep looking for it.
If you find one or more kilns at a river/lake there's probably a clay node
