Item Duplication

Postby ChronosAurvand » Sat Mar 10, 2012 8:54 pm

I was on this morning when the server crashed. Me and a friend had been farming and had moved a ton of stuff inside.

When the server crashed and reset a ton of stuff, all our stuff inside houses did not reset, but all the items that were outside, crops, furnaces, etc all were reset back to some earlier point. It appears houses back up more often than the rest of the world does (or just when someone leaves the house).

We determined that intentionally crashing the server, you would be able to duplicate items by leaving them outside until just before the crash, and then moving them into a house and crashing the server.

Whether this is why the crashes happen or not, it still points to a possible exploit that would lead to hideous consequences for the server.

This is as old as this game is. Devs have fixed this by preventing crashes, and by saving data.

Read my post in the thread about the rollback here in the Bugs section. While you MIGHT be able to pull of what you describe, I highly doubt it. loftar was (I think from a post I read earlier in the week) trying to clean up from another bug and caused the crash that forced the rollback. Otherwise, just crashing the server doesn't force this sort of things as data is saved before the server is shut down.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
