Resetting decaying items?

I was unsure of how to properly word the subject to fit the matter I have found..but I have noticed that if I take a decaying item IE: a dream catcher, and place it inside a boat--could probably work for all similar storage items--that it's appearance of decaying 'resets'. I'm not sure if it resets the process completly, or just alters the appearance..just thought I'd make this known..if it wasn't already.
