Laptop blackouts and ways to minimize required CPU

Postby Morporkian » Thu Apr 18, 2013 8:02 am

Hello, everybody! Morporkian here, new player and eager young Hearthling. My problem that I'm having at the moment, well... I'm not sure if it's really a bug as such, but this still seems like the most appropriate thread to post it in. Basically, my issue isn't really with the game itself- I start it up and play it just fine- hell, I don't even get the lag that so many people complain about (be thankful for small mercies, I know :P). Basically, everything's just peachy up to the point that my laptop's screen goes black and immediately turns off afterwards.
I know, I know, it's just my laptop overheating and shutting off, most likely, but I have two questions:

A) Is this an actual problem on the game's end, and am I jumping to conclusions?

B) If it is on my end, is there a way to lower the graphical, or other CPU-intensive, settings of the game so that it doesn't consume as much processing power?

I already checked the settings and all I can do is change the way the camera behaves and turn off full screen, and my laptop still blacks out.

This seems like a really awesome game from what I've played so far, and I'd hate to have to stop because my laptop will explode otherwise. Any advice on how I could sidestep or directly counter this problem would be appreciated.

it's not the game. If your laptop is overheating you should just get a new one because it's beyond repair now. I'm sure your power cell must be toast as well if your laptop overheats, which would contribute to the problem.

The game isn't very GPU/CPU intensive at all and any toaster could run Hnh easily

I think you should be able to set the power options to power saver or balanced which will consume less power with the cost of less performance, which might help a little.

Thanks for the input, Saxony. I'll try running it on "power saver" in a bit. Been running it on "balanced" up until now, so hopefully there'll be a difference. If not, I was already due for a new laptop from my dad as of Christmas anyway, so I'll just have to wait for a bit before I can start playing.

Or just clean it up or have it cleaned...( or change fan, new heat changing materials between heatsink and cpu/gpu ), sometimes having a bigger distance between the laptop and the surface it stands on helps or getting a metalstand with integrated fans...

Main heatproducer in laptop when playing HnH will be the harddisk...

Oh the cars ashtray is filled up - i have to buy a new one...

What are your laptop specs? Have you tried using Ender's custom client? Have you updated Java lately?
