Graphics bugs...

Postby RiverPhoenix » Wed Jun 10, 2009 12:06 pm

Hello again :)

I'm having some graphics issues, any one else able to help solve them? Or maybe they are endemic?

On the opening screen:

next to the cursor and above that the edging seems to be broken (it doesn't look like this on my friends Windows machine).

This is also the case with some of the windows in the game:

As well as the odd rendering of the attributes bar and - the most obvious - the fuzz of the main screen, yes it really does look like this for me... it's kinda like the static on a badly tuned TV. :(

Java is version: 6-07-3ubuntu2
Java plugin for Firefox: 1.6.0_07-b06
Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042513 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.10
Xubuntu: Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) - up to date with stable version

It may be a graphics issue again - any suggestions as to what?

And while I'm on that is the minimum version of Java this runs properly on (that you know of)? And is it possible to run it fullscreen? (it's windowed currently but that might just be because of my X resolution.)

Thank you for your time and help :)

I haven't ever seen anything like that. I particularly like the effect of that second image that really does look like analog noise. :)

But no, sorry; I really have no idea what might be causing it. I think you mentioned elsewhere that you're using an S3 card or something; since those are pretty uncommon, could it by any chance be a driver bug?

As for Java, it should be possible to run Haven on Java 1.5; and yes, it is kinda sorta possible to run it in fullscreen mode. It's a bit experimental, but try typing ":fs 1" once the main game interface is up (when you're in the world, that is). If it doesn't hang the game completely or anything, you can use ":fs 0" to return.

Apologies for the delay in me getting back to you (or even here) - my girlfriend has been moving flat and I've been helping sort things out and move stuff, all done now though :)

It is rather cool... I managed to reduce the amount though and remove the other graphics glitches by reducing the colour depth to 12bpp (rather than the default 24bpp) - I tried less than this but it made no extra gains in speed (I guess there's extra processing that counteracts the reduction in memory consumption) and it didn't look so great in 256 colours! ;)

It would seem, then, that it is that my graphics card is just not up to dealing with this much graphics - however I have another machine that I might well be able to get set up (and maybe occasionally my girlfriend's Windoze box) so maybe I'll be along again anyway :)

I tried this but it appears that fullscreen mode does not completely do away with the "static" fuzz (though, again, there is a slight reduction) but it does improve the speed to just barely not playable so I'm guessing that this machine just isn't capable - but then it's an old laptop so I'm not surprised it's a little slow in the graphics arena! :)

Thank you for the help and I hope to be of some help in return in the future.
