Another question btw - is it possible to no the water quality before building the well?
Why would it be the case that you could
only build in caves under grassland? I'm suggesting something based on the idea that you could build wells in caves in addition to everywhere else you can build them.
Well, I started my post by saying that I get a lot of misguiding readings on grassland... posted screenshots is just one example of the issue.. There are no visible well spots, and red sectors point quite erratically on next tile compared to the one you stood before. So if your assumption about the cave is correct that would mean that all (and that is a lot of them) well spots are underground and wells can be placed only there, while none are visible on surface. Which would translate into only wells under grassland, because 50 tiles away in forest i have located a spot and built a well just fine.

You don't have to try to use those flashing red intermittent pie segments. The well spot will show up as long as you have a dowsing rod equiped.
I couldn't figure out those red pie wedges either.
None show up on grassland at that place (comes to think of it - i never been able to nor seen a well on grass)
