Mining Problem- Why are these damn boulders falling?

To be clear, I know what cave-ins are. I was, however, under the impression that mine supports stopped those.

As seen in the picture below, that didn't work out so well.

And yes, I had that support there before I mined the tile.

I, and every part of that square, was inside the radius.

I don't think he would be in range of the tile he was mining if he was standing there tonky.
Of another era.

i think its more about positioning, ninijutsu.
just like how your chance of cave-ins is very low when you mine the first row tile (without supports) while standing on the cave floor.

It's not about your positioning, it's if the centre of the tile is in the radius or not.
Probably a bug since when rocks come down the tile does not get mined, can you reproduce it?

I've not been able to reproduce it, and I've mined around the entire perimeter of the support radius by now.

This happened to me quite a lot last world. (no pics, sorry) I was mining on L3, standing next to the support itself and I mined block and about 3 boulders fell. I mined onto the next tile which was now 2 blocks away from the support and the same thing happened.

It's all about not having black tiles within a 2 tile radius behind you, which is why you could dig the middle tile of a mine hole safely, and all the others will cave-in.
