In the beginning we started off with the chest.
The person picking up the chest in the beginning ports away with the chest. Then, my other friend (Xcom) "steals" the chest back from the person that ported away with the chest. This works with any liftable item.
I don't see how you don't see what is going on in the video. Also, yes... If you don't have rights to the person's claim where they ported the chest to the scent(s) is left where you make the chest reappear.

I've watched the video a couple of times, and it doesn't make sense when you really think about it, the guy just walks up and instantly gets a chest in his hands. There's no indication that it is possible to recapture something that isn't actually there.
I don't see how you think this makes sense, there's no indicator that the chest is/was there or that he was using a lift action to pick something up if it was there, you don't mention on how to actually make the chest reappear.
I haven't been able to replicate it, and I don't see how others could, or how you guys discovered this at all
