no longer compatible

the game ran fine for a long time, then one day I open pacho's client and notice that it had to be redownloaded...the login screen is centered instead of off to the left and top, and I was like, oh great a minor fix, then about 5 seconds into the game it gets really laggy and then I get a black screen and the game hangs until I get an error popup in the lower right near the clock that says the display driver has recovered successfully. at this point the game stays in a black screen and the mouse cursor is the only thing you can see. The graphic of the gold mouse cursor, the custom one from the game, it stays stuck on the screen within the h&h window. you can still move the mouse off the h&h window and get the regular windows cursor when it reaches the edge of the window.
At this point I was like, great I guess the minor cosmetic fix pacho had done has caused some incompatability, so I upgraded my video drivers only to find that it had no effect. I thought, ok, well at least the regular version of the client should still work rock solid, so I go to the official website and run the official, non resolution customizing, version of h&h only to find that instead of running for 5 seconds it runs for 10 seconds before getting so choppy that it crashes in the same manner.
Am I doomed to only be able to play on my laptop now? or is there any way to run the last version of the client from about a week ago that was still compatible.

Re: no longer compatible (more detail added)

here is the crash as it is occuring, rather than in the event log. And some more detail that I noted while it was happening. the game loads and is fine, if I stand still I think it would have worked longer, but as soon as I start moving I can only make it like 10 tiles before all graphics, including the mouse cursor freeze in place. then the entire screen, including the windows behind the h&h window all turn solid black for about 3 seconds, when it's done flashing back to the current resolution, the h&h window is solid black, the windows behind it are fine, and even the h&h cursor still works fine, it moves around within its black window, displaying the gold cursor for about 5 seconds, then the window changes to solid white and the cursor switches to a windows cursor and the window title changes to (not responding). At this point the only thing you can do is to forcably close the window using end task.
I will see if I can disable windows visual themes, which has made other incompatible games work in the past, but it is difficult because the way to do it is to right click the shortcut to the game and go to the compatibility tab and switch it from there, but I'll figure out a way to switch it without having to do that, since there is no way to do that without a shortcut to the game.

I tried using disable visual themes and also disable desktop composition, to no avail, I've rebooted a few times, and also I've tested my other games which all seem to work fine. This is my first time ever getting this error, about display driver recovering from an error, and it worked fine for a long time, and the first time it ever happened was after I downloaded the newest h&h, the one that made it so that the login screen was centered on the screen in pacho's client
