Elm boughs go into lean-to as branches

An elm tree produces both branches and boughs. I thought perhaps I could use the elm boughs in construction the way I use fir boughs. When I tried to make a lean-to with elm boughs it was happy to let me shift-click them into the construction -as branches.

Are elm boughs supposed to be usable to this and for roofing the timber house?
