Can't use commands

I press the necessary button and a : appears on my screen, I enter the commands I want, for example screensize, but my game simply freezes and nothing happens, I wait for a few minutes and it's still frozen.

I'd like to have some help, so I could change my screensize... 800x600 is kinda small...

are you using the default client or pacho's client? you can't change the screensize on the default client. on pacho's client you enter the screensize command into the console, which you bring up with the ` key. type help in the console for a list of commands.
