Java update nerfs opening character screen

I have a MacBook running 10.5.7 OS. Software update wants to install Safari, version 4.0.1 and "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 update 4" version 1.0
Installing these updates prevents me from launching my game character. All I get is a screen saying I should get Java ".... tis a good thing"
I needed to do a complete reinstall of a back up saved prior to the update in order to play. I do not know if the problem is with the Safari or the Java update.
I am going to wait a couple of weeks (for them to fix the bug(s)) and then try to update again, only this time I will do one at a time.
If I still have problems, I will post them here.
Edit: no problems when I took the updates one at a time. My MacBook claims to have a lot of unresolved permissions to repair that it will not "repair" so I suspect the problem was with my MacBook all along.

i tried myself yesterday but had no problems aside of finding the actual launcher. But that was on an Imac.
