Cannot remove newly planted tree

I have a stone axe equipped, and I tried to "chop down" a sapling that I just planted, since I didn't think it was in quite the right spot... but when I try, I simply move on top of it and stand there looking stupid. There is no error message, nor is there an hourglass. The game DOES complain if I try to do it without an axe equipped, though.

In the first stage of growing, the bounding box of the tree is so small
that it's non-existant (or something like that) and if you can't touch it,
you can't do anything with it.
So you'll just have to wait till the second stage.

Can a tree fail to grow from the first stage to the second stage? If so, there's a problem... Either way, you should be able to just yank up the dang things, as far as logic goes.

I think you can cover it with a basket and it should die.
