More Trouble With Village Membership

Postby kobnach » Mon Jul 13, 2009 5:34 am

So, after my last problem, I logged back on,w as re-added to village, re-made chieftain. I then spent several RL hours playing, building walls. I logged out to come in at my hearth fire, outside the walls, and did some hunting. Logged out again - this time with :lo. Tried to get back in, and found no option to login at village idol. Came on at hearth fire, and guess what - I'm out of the village again. Don't think I had done an explicit character save - but I was on for at least 4 hours, and three wasn't a crash. I think there's something bugged. Meanwhile, could one of the developers please fix this for me.

That sounds odd indeed. Which village is it that you're part of?

Barrenburg. It's quite new.

[Edit - one other detail: when I logged out with :lo, I believe i got a message about a bad save - but I've seen that before with :lo, so didn't worry about it.]

Bug found. There's a keyboard short cut for "leave village", with no confirmation dialogue, and it's very very easy to execute keyboard shortcuts when you intend to chat - I'm forever clicking chat window and having character walk towards bottom of screen - i.e. the click was misinterpreted and I'm not in chat mode.

p.s. Let me guess - the devs prefer vi to emacs, i.e. they think input mode is a good idea. At risk of bringing in irrelevancies, let me say that I'm consistent - I dislike modal input, especially when there is no feedback about which mode you are in. How about making all the keyboard shortcuts require <ctrl> or <alt> or even <esc>? Or giving us a toggle to turn off keyboard shortcuts - except hose involving <ctrl> etc. (I love keyboard shortcuts, but this implementation is unsafe.)

p.s. Loftar/Jorb, I'm not sure if you read bug threads beyond the initial post. Should I be putting the rest of this in a new post, not a reply, to make sure it gets noticed?

Sounds like a plan. Can't expect them to read every post.
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

I usually read the majority of all posts in the bug forum, and this one is noticed as well. I think the particular solution in this case is to ask for confirmation when leaving the village rather than remake the shortcut system, though. I, for one, would be quite bothered if I had to use some modifier keys for the shortcuts in the actions menu. Mind you, that is despite me preferring emacs over vi. ;)
