For the record, pole fishing and rod fishing are two very different fishing modes. Pole fishing was intended as a kind of slow "background task" while you AFK slightly or whatever, while rod fishing is a faster and more active mechanic. You need to craft a fishing rod to do the latter.

Forget that, let's focus on the real problem, the lack of the FISHING MUSIC

Stockpile your entrails and fish mainly at night in shallow or deep water. (Deep water nets better results in my experience at night with entrails.)

Just remember to be close to a fishing node, shown by a jumping fish, while doing so. It helps quite a bit. If you're not settled down yet and have already gotten enough LP from fishing then just don't do it unless you need food. Being nomadic and keeping a fishing pole is more pain than it is worth unless you are boating around.

I've found that the perc fishies that you really want tend to be in shallow water though, so try to figure out what you want from your fish and choose locations based on that
