A Newbie's Tale

Postby KatoKhan » Sat Dec 10, 2016 11:49 pm

First of all I have a small Disclaimer. I played Salem off and on (mostly off) for about 3 years but total playing time prolly like 6 months. I quit forever when I was slaughtered for no reason other than the sport of it and when I went to the forums to ask for help getting revenge all my posts were deleted by a dev friend of the Murderer.

Now onto my story.....

Chapter One (The Prelude)
I am a very seasoned Traveler and have visited an array of planes and dimensions. I have been in Brittania, Norrath, Azeroth, and many many more. As I got older my yearning for the nomadic and adventuresome life has lessened and I have been yearning for a more peaceful and settling life where I can make a home for myself and retire. I spent many many years searching for a place I could call home and had all but given up when I met a strange lady who made me nervous.
She took me in and gave me breakfast. She asked me if I came from a land down under. I thought this was quite strange and figured she was referencing Hell, but apparently she is just from a different universe called Australia.
She turned out to be a prophetess of some deity and swore that her God could help me. I smiled and listened to her prattle on for quite some time. As the evening grew quite late she offered to put me up for the night and I graciously accepted.

The Next morning I gained consciousness feeling quite strange and light headed. Upon looking around I was shocked to find I had no corporeal form.

After pulsing around for a bit and floating over some shallow water, I heard a voice telling me to leave the reflecting pool and cross the stream of dualities.
I followed the Voice and was given a human form. I then spoke to a wizard and told him my name was Kato.
I burned myself in a fire and passed out. When I awoke I was naked in a lovely field.

Chapter Two (The Beginning)

I was amazed at not having a sense of trepidation in this new land, but rather I was quite elated. There was a slight breeze over a field with some lovely trees and bushes. I spent the next few hours just basking in the glory of this new land. I picked some apples and blueberries and ate my fill. I found some curious objects and studied them to see what I could learn. I was amazed at the knowledge I gained. I learned the basics of this new world. Foraging for all sorts of food and curiosities, Hunting squirrels and Rabbits and Cooking some meat. I also dried some furs and skins. I felt quite at home and the solitude was welcomed. I found a nice little clearing and claimed it as my own, building some basic items like crates to keep goodies in and a lean-to that would offer a little protection against the chill of night.

I spent the next couple weeks gathering things, eating and studying things. I learned more of the land I was in and thought it time to explore a bit more. I started out wandering in ever growing circles to get the lay of the land. As I was doing so I heard a voice on the wind calling to me. I investigated and followed the "voice on the wind" until I wound up face to face with a talking tree of all things. The tree seemed benevolent so I journeyed to find the person it spoke of. After a brisk walk I found it, another tree. Well I greeted the tree as I was asked to do and returned to the first tree and upon telling it of my mission completion she gave me a leaf that was promised to make me a better martial artist. I thanked the tree and carried on about my daily duties.

After talking to trees, stumps and rocks and doing all sorts of strange things for them I was feeling it was about time to eat something a bit bigger than a rabbit so I made a slingshot, gathered up some rocks and set out to find something.
After an uneventful journey and the day closing in on night I decided to call it and return home. As I reached my little area I found a stranger in my camp !!!!
There was a bear sniffing around my fire like he owned the place. So I decided to do what any self aggrandizing Man of Men would do...... I screamed like a little girl and ran. Unfortunately for me the bear was not amused by my little screech and gave chase. I then learned 3 valuable life lessons. 1) Bears run faster than Kato 2) Bear claws are extremely sharp and dig quite deep. 3) When a bear decides to eat your face, you become a little sparklie formless mass and life goes full circle.

Chapter Three (The base)

After gaining a new physical form and again telling the pesky wizard my name I re-entered the world swearing I would not make the same mistakes.
Instead of making my home in the first clearing I could find I decided to travel a bit first. I walked and walked for a few hours when, low an behold, what did I find on this quaint little beach ? a Rowboat with oars in it. Naturally I looked around for an owner but finding nobody I decided to take my adventure to the water. After a very lengthy journey I found it. The perfect little spot. Two low hills with a little area in between them and a cave entrance. I knew the close proximity to the river (and a lake) would be the perfect setting.

I disembarked and began to build my little slice of heaven. I built a house, gathered lots of stuff, reconnoitered the cave and learned more about the world. I ate well and studied everything I could find. I mined out a large portion of the cave and built a kitchen inside. I built a farm and a second house. Built a couple animal pens and tamed a few animals.

Chapter Three continued (The Base)

And inside the cave I built my home a little more making a nice little kitchen with lots of food storage other storage.
I really felt I was coming along in my worldly progression, especially for a solo hermit.

About this time I met a young lady named Amanda that seemed very pleasant and freely offered advice and answered questions I had about the life in this land. We spoke often and the talks we had made me miss people. The more I thought about it the more I decided that the solo Hermetic life just wasn't doing it for me. As if it were a sign from the cosmos, Amanda offered me a spot in her realm where I could still do my own thing but be near others for some socialization. It was a hard decision as I had already started a pretty good beginning, but I finally decided that before I built it up any more I would go ahead and move to be a more social hermit.

Chapter 4 (Preparing to Move)

So this brings us up to my current situation. I have made the hard decision and now I prepare for the move. I made a wagon and was planning on moving via wagon, but the thought of crossing the world in a wagon made me cringe.
So I got the crazy idea of building a HUGE boat and packing it up with everything and setting sail. So here is me preparing for the move. Getting all the wood blocks and boards, Rope and cloth, and everything else I will need to build the boat of my dreams.

My hand are blistered from all the board cutting and rope twining but I have to work through it.
I am over half way there already and am just waiting for my crops and my potted nettles to finish making the rope and my tar kilns to burn up all the pine trees I could find for that sticky goodness.

Hey Kato,

You had certainly made a good start, you were very lucky with the area you picked, in that it was away from everyone else and out in the new grids. I admit I worry slightly about you making the move, esp now you are documenting it, it may have been better to arrive and then tell your story ... :) ... but, hopefully you do arrive safely and we are all looking forward to having you join us and hearing about your adventures en route. :D

Well the story telling has multiple reasons with its timing.

First of all it is my way to get myself out there so people can know me a little. I do want to get to know the community.
Second of all it is another outlet for me to enjoy the game. Taking screenshots and sharing my story makes me relive the fond moments.
and lastly it provides the opportunity for people to remain neutral and just watch, to help out in any number of ways, or to hinder and possibly even kill me. This is going to
either reinforce my choice of games or, like salem, bid me adieu without wasting any more time.

Now don't misunderstand my meaning of the last part. I am not a cry and rage quit over getting killed person, I am a veteran of many PvP games and quite enjoy pvp
in its rightful place. But, to me at least, this game does not call for PvP just for the sake of doing it. I understand PvP if you are having territory disputes, encroaching neighbors,
self defense, etc etc. But if someone is going to go out of their way to hunt down and kill a new player for a few items they don't even need (new player = low quality everything)
especially when that new player has 0 chance of defending himself (with only 160 hp I would be one shot by damn near everyone) then it tells me I am in the wrong game and will go back to
building in either Landmark or Camelot Unchained.

Yeah, i was joking only to tease Amanda :D . The community of this game is very nice...and from what i have seen untill now she is one of the nicer player in the game, then there is always someone not very nice (for different reason) but i think it's a good thing for the game, also.
I can tell you that i have no wall/palisade...i have not stuff really high quality, but untill now noone have stolen or tried to kill me rather many people left me gifts outside my claim.
I guess it can change on the different areas on the map.

Not much to add yet, just plugging away at burning an entire pine forest and making tons of flax and hemp for the ropes.

Hopefully will be ready to move in two to three days
