By this stage of world the remaining players are mostly the rpg crowd that enjoy a peaceful game, usually 120-200 people. The PvP folks are mostly those who have "been there, done that" for everything in the game within five months, get bored, stop playing and wait for new world, usually about the same amount of them. The rest of the 2k people at the start of a world are newcomers who play briefly and leave.
A major issue with retention is that very little of this game is intuitive; a few beginner quests to help you make an ax or get something to drink, then you're on your own with little idea what to do or how to do it. Chat is helpful, but at the start are many established players who will give bad advice "because it's funny" or try to lure you to them (or get your location) for an attack, so you must be careful. Thus many quit in frustration in the first day, a few make a decent start but quit when all their effort is destroyed by some griefer.
I fully hope what was intimated at the start of this world comes to pass - Steam worlds of around six months duration (great for those who get bored in five months) and non-Steam worlds lasting over a year (two years, maybe longer, would be fine with me). In the longer world exhausted resources could respawn randomly a week or so after being depleted.
