[MMORPGs] What did you play?

Postby MaltGrain » Fri Oct 31, 2025 12:19 am

This waiting for patch thing got me remembering my oldschool MMO days; bOy, HaVe I gOt SoMe StOrIeS!.

Sincerely though, I started as a young teen on The Legend of Mir - did anyone else play that?
LoM was a Chinese diabalo clone with 3 classes and such abominably low drop rates that only 1 single character on the entire server had the top tier armour (They used to parade it around town, really). It was often that characters used 'hand me down' guild gear multiple levels below their own. The best thing about this was that it made everything valuable, created busy text based market palces (no autovendors! Players had to personally sell stuff beween themselves) and deathly incouraged Player killing (PK) for a chance at carried gear.
I found some of my old posts of the guild forum, wayback machine. It's so cringe but it was good at the time.

Anyway, I went off to Ragnarok after LoM went bust. EVE Online after that for much of my adult life - I never really got far in any, no MVP battles in Rag, nor barely a touch of Null and Capitals in EVE. Even LoM, my wizard was lvl36 out of .. max 50, and he was always poor.

These days I'm not playing much. I'm trying to get back into EVE, finally trying corp CEO but going is slow as home situation is limited my engagability. Hearth is, well.. not so interesting right now.

Did anyone check out that DUNE game? I know it's not quite an MMORPG but it was on my radar, even though it seems to have made minimal spash. I haven't heard a single thing about faction gameplay, but I haven't looked much. I bought into PirateSoftware's hype, damn.

Don't bother with Dune. It's really a survival game with the bare minimum beyond that tacked on. The economy, endgame "content," PvE and PvP are all so dreadfully undercooked they actually actively detract from the game.

If you want the equivalent of PvE Conan: Exiles dune reskin, however, you can get that if you choose to stay in the starter zone and never leave. Albeit with less content.
All those videos, dev interviews, media allusions to an mmo-esque endgame were complete fabrication. The trailer depicting combined arms group PvP was not even vertical slice. It's comically faked.

Based on the games you've described liking, I'd suggest you take a look at Albion Online. The EvE Economy is top tier, but the Albion economy basically copied it and then iterated improvements. EvE's economy has had to persist since 2003 or whatever, and they have only been able to add to it, because of the persistent nature of the game they couldn't make complete fundamental changes. Albion was able to rip off EvE, and had a few beta wipes where they made serious additions, before they settled on a final system they've had that works astoundingly well.

The varied content is far more accessible and less spreadsheet/boring time consuming than EvE. It has lower barriers to entry, but similar endgame options, and then some. The primary advantage that EvE has over it is space ships if you're into that (some people love Sci-Fi), and that it has an older and more mature playerbase and the "meta-game" around that is impressive - EvE probably has that advantage because it's more than a decade older and scooped up a lot of your generation when it was the premiere sandbox experience for about a decade, and precisely because the higher barrier to entry filters most casuals and people with low attention spans.

The only available entertainment in Albion is farming black dungeons 24/7 with a group of 5 people or running around as part of a PvP gang of 10 players who hunt down these farmers inside the dungeons.Other activities either require being a member of an alliance with over 500 active players, or insane amounts of in-game currency, which again leads back to black dungeon runs with 5 people.

Hellgates, mists 1v1/2v2, Crystal arenas, roads of Avalon, faction warfare, Castle raids, tracking, gathering, crafting, black market running, hauling in PvE areas, market speculating, crafting station racketeering, roaming for rare mobs, collecting energy spheres, setting up a hideout for bonuses, etc etc?

I haven't played in ages but that's content I can think of off the top of my head RN. I miss the old GvG 5v5s, even the stupid crystal league, every time I play I get mad they more or less deprecated the top tier 5v5 competitive content in favor of the more casual stuff lol.

My favorite passtime in Albion was running around Yellow zones attacking PVEr's while encoranging them to attack back. One did, and won the fight. Loads of yellow bellied police would end up chasing you across the map with no rhetoric of justice, it was ridiculous. I also tried blocking a common trade road with one of those wind CC spells but it didn't work very well. Also some retard griefer chased me for an hour because I dared to turn my name yellow? People don't make sense.
The markets are pretty fun too - not so fine detailed as EVE, which brings a nice pen & paper feel to it. You can make some silver moving low tier weapons into the city, then spend it all gambling on those gemstone things.
With good music the openworld PVE can have a decent flow to it, especially when you mark enchanted resource nodes and elite mobs. Blackzone openworld PVE was quite fun too - didn't try red.

For some reason the launcher won't connect to the servers. Tried everything to get it running again.

Oldschool Runescape has been my staple since I was like 10 yrs old. Learned to type on that game and my reading/writing drastically improved after I started, which was nice

Ragnarok online, Maplestory.. When MMOs first starting booming I played tons of no-name ones I can't even remember. Aion briefly because I heard you could fly but then in reality the flying was limited to specific zones and otherwise you could only glide, so I lost interest pretty quick.

In more recent years Elder Scrolls Online has been fun. I put 150 hours into New World recently and they just announced they're shutting it down a few days ago lol. Albion Online was fun but I never joined a clan/guild so never got the full effect of it.

I played WoW in highschool and started of Cataclysm. I went from lvl 15-80 pretty much exclusively doing battlegrounds. I came back briefly for the panda expansion and played death knight or whatever the dual bladed class was but didn't stick around long.

Played Legacy Haven since w5 and still log on today -- Played Hafen since it came out but the game is dead now and really not enjoyable to me at the present time.

I'll unprivate one of my old videos from Darkfall: Unholy Wars, I guess.
It was a full loot hardcore PvP sandbox MMO.
Great fights, I enjoyed the small -> midscale PvP. It was a small community because it suffered from what most hardcore full loot PVP games suffer from, lol.
That being said, it had some of the best third person combat I've ever seen in an MMO, all skill based. All ranged attacks are simulated projectiles, there were spells that created physics effects (you see me casting a pool of water on a downed ally to stop them from executing him, he was in a downed but not out state), and you were typically running a dozen or so abilities in a free form "build your own class" setup.

Here's me running a squad wiping a clan:

Sad it died. Servers shut down permanently, no emulation. No way to play - Even if there was, the servers would all be dead.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Darkfall

Very steep learning curve but I think I got it down close to the time it was ending, unfortunately. I'd love the IP to be sold and re released someday.

I have a whole playlist of videos from that time. Piracy was the best thing about that game https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXuB ... KGgYkIoVn3
