Don't hate on Philly. The writer of our Constitution was from Philly, and wanted German to be an official language... cause, you know, so many that had settled in Pennsylvania were of Germanic decent.
That said, I was getting fluent in Spanish at one point in my life, but never could find anyone to pracitce with (yaa suburban middle america... :/ whereas urban middle america is full of spanish speaking homes).
I forget who the comedian was that did a bit on languages, but it was basically "In America, you travel a thousand miles and only ever have to speak English. In Europe, you travel a hundred miles and have to speak five different languages along the way" or something like that.
