I'm not sure if this is because I was using the amber client and the walruses would not load until after I died, but everyone should be careful of invisible walruses.

Yeah... whenever there's a patch, use vanilla till you're sure your current client is updated, or an update isn't needed. In this case, it was the first time the asset was seen, so had to get it from the server and wait for it to load. Would/could happen to someone using vanilla client, too.

Even so, the walrus resources are only ~100k large, so unless one is literally playing over GPRS or something, they really shouldn't take very long at all to load. Network troubles?

I've had some issues in the past loading resources and the subsequent displaying. Downloads of the resources seemed to be fine and relatively quick. It took longer to get loaded into the renderer and actually shown in the game world. I'm not sure if that's due to a slower computer, processing priorities, or other things. I'll note I haven't ran into the issue the last world or two, but I haven't been playing a lot w8 and 9, either.

The other day a bear popped into existence really close to me which I assumed was the bear spawning. Now I think it was the assets downloading instead. I can definitely see that getting people killed.
