Other than just grinding better stats, there are few tips that can help.

First, you will want to keep a sword on belt and bind it on hotkey (confusingly also called belt, at least on game files) so that you can instantly switch to sword with single button press. Most people will only really increase UA, (give MC some token increase to benefit from boosts to it) but from my experience, getting 100UA and 100MC and using Shield Up, Uppercut and Sideswipe will result in very cheesy combat rotation where you spam uppercut until yellow opening is high enough, then switch to spamming sideswipe. I haven't spawned dozen slimes at once but for that, Storm of Swords of Full Circle attacks can help.

AGI is most important combat stat as it will determine your cooldowns. Be sure to increase it.

STR is only useful for doing damage, and with a weapon, is only a 4th root multiplier (meaning you need 160 to do 2x damage, 360 to do 3x, etc.) Good weapon quality will increase damage more.

wait.. what?? i think you have it wrong magic,, Str will determine how hard you hit regardless of weapon or not?? if you have 2k str and you punch you will do more damage than someone with 10 str at the same opening.. correct me if i am wrong.. pretty sure thats right though or else why would anyone ever use puch or other ua attack moves?
