It was probably a patch of high quality dirt. At my previous residence, I was next to someone's claim of nothing but dirt, and when I started getting settled in, I ventured out again to see it and it was palisaded.

Found it on level one whilst mining. Fun.

Note: I did not kill it, I ran about as fast as I could towards the cave entrance and got some warriors to kill it.
