What a blast from the past... I haven't seen this in 30 year.

edit: don't you guys think Max was better done than some of the other more modern 3D faces?

Max was an actor wearing a prosthetic mask/makeup, not CGI. I didn't know that until five or six years ago. I actually don't remember what I thought about this supposed technology - it's just too long ago. They pretaped segments and then did old fashioned film tricks like cutting frames for the video and audio glitching effects - used a vocoder type device to loop the audio glitching.

fake edit; now I need to go and read about how they did all of this stuff.

It was very well done, that's for sure. Had me fooled as a kid. I didn't know about it until I started studying 3D programming and design in the mid 90s, and the stuff they were coming out with at that time, it would have taken a month to render a few minutes of the show. Given what they were doing with video games and such, it wasn't much of a stretch of the imagination to see them actually creating a working head. The crew certainly didn't dissuade the notion that it was an actual 3D rendering.

As a complete different tact, Max Headroom was a precursor to a lot of the other "alt view" talk shows that HBO and cable has ran.
