Claims remain inactive for a long time after being placed, so when you're travelling with a wagon and have to stop for the day, your stuff is always vulnerable. It's a known mechanic and there's no way around it. If you really thought it was abandoned you could have checked the decay state of the things inside it, or just the animals' food trough.
