Well, yes, but I'd prefer not rolling back a few hours. Also, what would it solve? It wouldn't make it easier to find the bug.

Granger wrote:Or what do you try to find?

Not entirely sure, but it appears to be some nasty double-free bug.

Anyway, I did find a potential bug. I can't quite see how it could be triggered, but perhaps it could be somehow. Will try to run the server normally with it fixed, but if it crashes again, I'm not unlikely to be sleeping.

That was quick - but ran nicely while it lasted ;)

Yeah, there was a simple error in the bugfix.

Rocking LVM snapshots instead, btw.

as long you don't have beta server with people to test new features, backups are necessary. well, at least any opportunity to go back. it's just an opinion.

I would contest that: backups are always a must.

But I'm still very much impressed about the general stability of the server, which is amazing given that it is the work of a single (or two, in case Jorb joined in after his recent C-learning adventure) brain.

I have no complaints, but... A similiar issue could last even for a longer time in future. If 1 of 3 patches produces a crash which lasts for 3 or 4 hours, why don't you have a backward compatibility for map files or at least a beta-server?

I usually do; this was a fairly extraordinary upgrade for the map format, in preparation for the Bigger Thing® hinted at in the OP.

There, I found another bug. This time I can actually imagine it to have been the actual problem, so I hope everything should be alright now.

Map expansion confirmed;
Fire-spitting dragons confirmed;
Trolls going up holes and wrecking havoc on the surface confirmed;
Rivers flooding villages and killing hundreds confirmed;
Nukes confirmed;

EDIT:
This has been a long battle.
Can we PLEASE know what the bug was, when you solve it, just for the sake of curiosity and love for your work? :D

Could we get a slightly longer (like 15 seconds) warning before shutting down the server so we have a chance to put down lifted stuff?
