Well, to be honest, I've always built/worked on my single character/main character. Yes, including all the digging
I didn't dig alone, though - my brother and his fiancee have helped a lot, some other people have helped a few times too.

But yeah, no alts were ever killed for the construction of Aurora :3

I can't confirm, but probably - yes. The only 2 Dark Hearts I've ever seen were both from Trolls, so it makes sense.
Besides, if Dark Hearts come from "inherently evil" beings, it makes sense that trolls would give them more often as they seem to be depicted as evil beings

Some boars might be, yeah. They might be possessed by dark forest spirits, this is what is stirring the dryads crazy
But, obviously, trolls are inherently evil more often than any other animal
