Sorry, I performed what I thought was a routine operation on the server, but it turned out to require a ton of memory and swapped out everything else before I noticed it.

Is the server down for anyone else or is that just New Zealand internet connection dicking me over again?

Sorry, I'm going to take a rollback on this crash. I could probably fix it up properly, but there are several factors conspiring against me and I see a long night of debugging before me while I need that time to work on the reset instead. I hate having to resort to this, but Imma have to call it being what it is.

How do rollbacks work? I seem to have lost 5 meteoric iron bars. They were stockpiled near me during the crash, gone now. And they're not back in my inventory where they were before, nor in the long term place I stored them before.

Things just revert to back when they were last saved, and characters and different parts of the map save at different times. In your case, the old storage position and your character's inventory had saved after taking the bars from them, but the location where they were now stored had not yet saved.

Does this mean that he could have theoretically ended up with the bars in his inventory and in the stockpile if they had saved at the right times?

It does, yes. His picture is very accurate.

That being said, there are some mechanics that (mostly by accident) work to prevent item duplication due to rollbacks, but it's still possible. It's just a bit more unlikely than losing items.
