I hate seeing dead animals like that and even worse is when you see an abandoned place but can't get in and half the animals are dead and you know the rest are starving and going to end up the same. :(

Silly when they are not real I guess, but tugs on the heart just the same.

I really wish that when players decide to leave they at least open up the gates, if not declaim and open, so that the animals can get out and at least have a bit of freedom before starving if not found by someone and taken in ... also would make it easier for others to get in and scavenge. :D

Depends on how you define reality. Really once you accept that the only proofs of the existence of what you would call real cows, or the 'real' world around them rely on blind acceptance that everything you percieve with your senses fundamentally exists, which is a bit of a leap of logic really, then it isn't hard to imagine that perhaps Haven cows might be just as real as what you percieve to be real cows. In fact they could well be Plato's perfect form of cow which give existence to the 'real' world cows and by letting them die maybe the cows that have been percieved to exist in the world of our senses would cease to be. Who knows?

The recently opened Monument to the "Meeting with the Goddess of Water" in Aurora. It can be easily visited, it is located just north of the Defenders' Gate.

Excerpt from "Northern Bonfire Tales" by Jérôme the Explorer, Chapter 19

"Here in the northern lands it is believed that long ago, when the hearthlings first came to this world, many of them would die to the raging conflict that existed between the Primal Gods that had barely finished shaping the land. Most notable was the conflict between the Goddess of Water and the God of Fire. The goddess was kind and benevolent in nature, being one of the Primals responsible for springing life to the land through the sweet touch of her waters while her counterpart, lord of Fire and Smoke, was a natural lover of chaos and disruption - seeking to end life through ember and ash.

In their fight, however, hearthlings were the ones losing the most. Be it engulfed by the fires of the God or washed away by the storms and waves of the Goddess, nature could not be tamed. The hearthlings would need to conquer those adversities if they were to ever thrive. Turns out that in all his mighty destructive power, the God of Fire could be tamed and controlled far more easily than the unbearable force of the sea and the river currents. These could not be controlled, something had to be done about it. And this is when the three mortal heroes of legend emerged, says the tale.

It is believed that their leader conquered Fire with Water and found a new resource which was the harnessed power of both elements, the Brimstone. He coated his sword with it, carrying with him the power to stop the God of Fire, a secret that would be most dearly wanted by the Goddess of Water. So together they ventured to the far North where it was believed the Goddess lived, far into the Unending Sea of Ice. They traveled for many years, fighting both nature and cruel hearthlings that served chaos and violence but - in the end - they found the Goddess on a beautiful grove among pillars of ice and marble.

Raising his Brimstone blade, the hero pledged the Goddess to soothe her seas and her rivers, bringing peace and bounty to all the hearthlings that could now fish and survive across the shores of the world. The Goddess heard his pledge, accepting his knowledge on how to defeat the God of Fire and forming a covenant with hearthlings that lasts to this day, allowing us to peacefully settle near the waters of this world and thrive with its riches."
