Are those icons persistent or do you have to manually attach/scan them each time?
I think that gob id's which would be a good way to recognize objects sometimes change, so you could not use them as a reference for longer periods.

icons are persistent as long as the gobs are loaded/onscreen. when they go off screen, they get removed. When back on screen they automatically get rescanned/reloaded
i do not base off gob id's though since you're right.. they do change and are not useful in that regard
