Turns out it was one of those bugs that have been present since before the 2015 release and could have been easily triggered at any time. It's always fascinating when one of them takes multiple years to show up.

On a high level, lighting a firebrand didn't properly initialize a variable determining the return value of the crafting function, which, when interrupting it, could cause it to be infinitely recrafted and re-interrupted since the crafting system thought it returned success (due to "craft all").

Who in their right mind would "craft all" a firebrand?

Clearly they were trying to waste stamina to drain their hunger bar to eat more food. Wait, I think I'm mixing up H&H versions.
