Don't know if you are not supposed to do it that way, but lighting the cauldron isn't that bad as it was last world. I usually split a block, put in one branch as initial fuel and make a firebrand - most times I could add the leftover two branches or stockpile them when I know I won't need that long.
And if you know that this session will be a bit longer then don't care about climate change (since it'll take several hundred years till we will have problems with the shore coming closer) and throw in another block and you won't have to relight it for the rest of the day. Just always take out the water the moment crafting is done to save on the real hassle of getting new...
