Clumsy UI, your townies and the NPC heroes have the mental capacity and survival instinct of an ant worker, no tutorial + untuitive gameplay, and unfinished while being labeled as complete by the developer.

I myself did not consider it complete, the author did and released its alpha state. If you want a game that is similar in gameplay but far better and more completely, I'd recommend Gnomoria.

Gnomoria is nice if you are able to ignore the fact that the dev has disapperead without a word and that thus all of the nice potential is lost.

Are not all these games just dwarf fortress? Why not just play original game?

Actually he was still around the last time I check a while back. He just hasn't posted much in public before the official release.

If that is the case you can argue that DF is like Simcity or The Sims but each game has its own quirks that makes the game different from its predecessor. An example is Stardew Valley is a spiritual successful of Harvest Moon but has made modern upgrades to its while maintain the spiritual elements that had the original so good and caught steam (and himself) by surprise.

That official release was kind of a joke though.

Dwarf Fortress hasn't been abandoned, though, and even though less than half finished, still doesn't have the bugs Towns has. ToadyOne and ThreeToe may not be the greatest programmers in the world, but they're dedicated to their art and fans.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
