I like this theory. I was beginning to suspect the map was not a simple shape (circle/rectangle) but rather something more esoteric. I see lots of people talking about hitting an edge, I have hit one, and I don't think I've hit map edge in haven before now. I certainly spawned rather near to it

hello :)
when i first hit a vortex, i tried to scroll along the map in direction of my hearth fire to get an idea of its location. no success.
then i hit the SE corner of the map, traveled to the NW corner passing "ring of brodgar". so i had a diagonal "known path" through the whole map.

the idea now:
- open minimap, measure (by known locations) how far i have scroll the map to view a certain distance
- next select vortex "local resource" in the list of PoI's to center it
- scroll E, did almost twice as far as the whole map is in size
--> no known location was passed, keeped black all the time
- did the same with scrolling W
--> no known location was passed, keeped black all the time

i should have passed a known map part, since one diagonal N to S is explored. that could show some things:
1. the vortex was on another map to the S (hearth fire direction was N) -> *1
2. i did not scroll enough to pass through known map parts -> *2
3. something different

ascii art time for illustration:
Code: Select all
                          *1

             #        +                            #
             #          +                          #
             #            +               +        #
             #              +            +         #
             #+                +        +          #
             #  +              + +     +           #
             #     +        +  RoB+  +             #
             #       +    +         +              #
             #         ++             +            #       *2
             #        +                  +         #
             #      +                       +      #
             #     +                            +  #
             #                                    +#
             #######################################
#: Border
RoB: Ring of Brodgar
+: Expored area
*n: Vortex location?

the answer is - 3. something different:
after vortex teleport, even if only one map tile is missing to connect.. the surrounding is black.. so the discovered map tile can not be scrolled to something "known". i sailed towards my hearth fire and after some time, my discovered vertex-path got suddenly connected to the known map when i hit a known maptile.. not befor that

so, no parallel maps or far away super grids. its all the same map, but you are not able to scroll from the vortex discovered map part to the already known map part until you "manually" connect them via travelling -> thats probably the source of confusion and the different maps theory

next part for me is connecting the vortexes locations to the known map and mark which vortex goes to which location.. but thats another story

about vortex navigation so far:
- one vortex leads to exact one location (you can travel vortex A and it gets you always to the same vortex B)
- it is possible, that one vortex has different "sources", but always the same destination

about the shape of the border, i assume its rectangular.. but have no prove for this.. the shown border is just for illustration purposes ;)

greetings

I think one simple thing that largely disproves this theory is that party arrows keep working after going through a vortex. Everytime in haven that you go to another "map" (cave layers, houses, etc) party arrows stop working for obvious reasons.

I don't see why this would be any different if vortex indeed sent you to another "world"

Cave is different layer. It is technically possible that all ''worlds'' will share layer on the backend, just with invisible wall so you can not walk between world and must use vortex. So I think maybe this does not completely confirm or debunk theory.

I'm not saying I believe in the "worlds" theory but like so many others I did spawn near a border, last time I've hit one was world 6.
